Save Your Heart and Your Money This Year

For many of us, the start of a New Year means cutting down on unhealthy habits and making it a priority to go to the gym. For those who plan to be financially savvy and lead a healthy lifestyle, the ability to work out without the gym can lead to increased heart health and savings!

In the hustle and bustle of city living, it can be difficult to make time to exercise at a local gym. Leading a healthy lifestyle is important for all individuals, but the ability to relieve stress is an added bonus for city-goers who work at a desk for the majority of the day.

One common misconception keeping people from “exercising” is the belief that all physical activities for strengthening, toning and keeping physically fit is that a gym membership is required.

Drop the vision of the overpriced sports club draining your wallet and begin to imagine a healthier you without the gym. Here are a few quick tips that will benefit your health and can be done each and every day—taking little time out of your already hectic schedule:

The morning routine: A small dose of exercise in the morning will help to keep the mind and body at ease, giving it an extra boost of energy—far more superior than the average cup of coffee. As few as ten jumping jacks will get the blood flowing while utilizing the entire body and burning the calories.

Public transportation: Though mass transit proves to be a godsend for some, it may act as a barrier between you and a brief, much needed, cardio session. Rather than taking the subway, bus or cab, leave a few minutes earlier to avoid the stress of rushing to your destination. Move at a fairly brisk pace to get a quick workout. Walk briskly for 10, 20, or even 30 minutes on your way to work and burn off some, if not all, of your sweet morning coffee!

Use the stairs: If you have a desk job, taking the stairs will allow you to speed up your metabolism before sitting for the majority of the day. Walking up the first few floors will increase your stamina, strengthen leg muscles and aid in a heart-healthy lifestyle. Make this a part of your daily movement.

Taking small steps throughout the day will allow you to maintain a healthy lifestyle without the hefty price of a gym membership. Start with as few as 10 minutes a day and reap the benefits of increased stamina allowing you to push the extra mile, literally!
